Why Does This Event Inspire So Many People?

Riders know it's for the babies! March of Dimes riders want all babies to get a healthy start. RIDE allows riders and motorcycle lovers to promote the support they give to the March of Dimes mission, while educating family and friends about the seriousness of premature birth.

Facts

Riders know that:

  • Approximately one third of premature births have no known cause.
  • There has been a 31% rise in premature birth since 1981.
  • More than half a million babies are born prematurely each year in the United States. That's almost 1,400 per day.
  • 13 babies die every day from complications related to pre-term birth.
  • Premature babies who survive could face a lifetime of health issues such as chronic lung disease or vision and hearing loss.
  • The average hospital charge for a healthy baby is $1,700, compared with $77,000 for a baby born prematurely.
  • 1 in 8 babies is born prematurely.
  • Premature birth is the leading cause of death in the first month of life.
